Back to Table of Contents Babylonian Rule
The reign of Gedaliah, a non-Davidic ruler appointed by Nebuchadrezzar, is suppressed by the biblical compilers. Ishmael, a Davidic claimant, assassinates Gedaliah, but is opposed by Judean officials, and so flees to Egypt, taking Jeremiah. The third Babylonian deportation then ensues. G2K and Chron are silent as to Judah after the fall, but Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Deutero-Isaiah 40-55 document the state of affairs. Aramaic becomes the dominant spoken language. Deutero-Isaiah asserts the first truly Hebrew monotheism by asserting that gods other than YHWH are impotent idols; There is also an Egyptian diaspora: the Elephantine military colony assimilates with Egyptians, but keeps contact with Jerusalem and Samaria, and has a temple for syncretic worship condemned by Jeremiah ~~~~~~~~
